My New Thing

So, I grew up with a fisherman. I had times of fishing. When I married, there was a year of giving fly fishing a try. I have never committed to it on my own though. When my youngest son began to throw himself into fishing, I felt that old “niggle”. So, I bought a pole and a bit of gear. I LOVE new things. I love trying new foods, new restaurants, new places, new experiences. Covid has cramped my style honestly! Fishing actually fit ALL the new rules perfectly. This new rod and reel are serving the purpose; new experiences. I decided to learn with this and learn as much by trial and error as possible. I have not caught a fish yet! BUT I’ve learned how to use a spinner reel, cast with it right handed, learn that I need it to reel on the left, changed it myself, tied my own knots, replaced my own hooks, sinkers, floaters, and how to un-snag from rocks...I’ve gone fishing with my son and his friend Dan, once at the ocean and one time they took me to their favorite hole! They have offered advice and yet I have attempted this all on my own. I’ll be buying my first fly rod and gear soon. What thing have you always wanted to try? What new thing do you want to learn? Just do it!!! I’ll tell you, I thought, why would you do this? Fishing was always the “mans“ thing...why would I try it? I’ve ALWAYS wanted to. Now I make my own money, my own choices, and I did this afraid. What? Afraid? What was I afraid of in fishing? It was new, I might fail, I would look stupid, I don’t know how by myself....you name it, every thought of fear came to me. Especially that first time on the river by myself. Now, I feel a bit empowered, peaceful, excited. Because I am moving into areas new yet feeling satisfied. Overcome your fear! Live! You deserve it. We get one chance at this life. Share here what you want to try, your fear, your new thing...let’s hear from you!
